A Different Type of T.H.U.G
FAIRFIELD — Members of Operation THUGS formed a circle in the Food Maxx parking lot this past weekend as they do twice a month for a prayer. They held hands, gave thanks to God and hit the streets.
The members of Operation THUGS — The Harvest Unit Gathering Souls — know the streets well. On April 13, 30-year-old Ryan Garrett recalled the often “awkward” encounters he has with people from his past.
People ask Garrett: “Do you got it?”
By it, they mean drugs. Garrett gave up his drug-dealing ways after a state prison stint, went on to graduate with honors from Solano Community College and now is a case manager for a nonprofit. He says these days he has something else he wants to offer people.
“I tell them, ‘I got Jesus for you,’ ” he says with a smile.
Operation THUGS, an evangelical ministry, is a collection of Christians from different churches in Fairfield, Vacaville and the greater Bay Area, some of whom have severed ties with gangs, drugs or alcohol. Its mission is to minister to people who call the streets home: homeless, prostitutes, gang members.
